Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco is a local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International that partners with hardworking families, community volunteers and donors to build and rehabilitate simple, affordable homes in Marin, San Francisco and on the Peninsula.  A non-profit Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide, Habitat was founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a decent, safe and affordable place to live in dignity.

FPCSM is partnering with Habitat through financial support and regular volunteer participation.  Currently, we are helping build a 36-unit condominium complex with parking at 7555 Mission Street in Daly City - Habitat Greater San Francisco's largest and most ambitious affordable housing development to date.  This "high-density, green, urban and infill" development "allows partner families to build an integrated community that will be close to public transportation, amenities and jobs."  Work began in February 2011 and is expected to be complete in December 2012.  Community volunteers assist in construction Wednesday through Saturday, 8:30am - 4:15pm.

Habitat homes are sold to partner families at no profit, financed with affordable, no-interest loans.  Habitat is not a giveaway program - in addition to a down payment and monthly mortgage payments (which go towards building more houses), homeowners invest hundreds of hours in labor in building their own house and the houses of others.  Through this ministry, Habitat is making the dream of homeownership a reality for low-income families - otherwise virtually unattainable for many people in this area.

"If you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday... your people will rebuild the ancient ruins and will rise up the age-old foundations; you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls, Restorer of Streets with Dwellings."
